Strict entry measures force tourists, who would otherwise choose Montenegro, go on holidays in Albania, Croatia, Turkey, Greece, Egypt and Tunisia.
This is the actual concern of the tour operators in Montenegro, the local media reports.
“Countries like Croatia, Turkey, Greece, Albania and Egypt are not implementing the criteria of 25 active COVID-19 patients per 100,000 inhabitants. They have open borders, but with social distancing measures in place or mandatory face masks. This is a case in Albania, Greece, Croatia, Egypt. Another option is testing tourists on arrival,” Fly Montenegro agency states.
The Association of Hotels and Apartments of the Municipality of Ulcinj says the more favorable entry measures currently in place in Albania mean that up to 90% of their tourist capacity is filling up.
Belarusians and Ukrainians choose Albania
Nearly 100,000 tourists from Belarus and Ukraine visited Montenegro last year. But this summer season the number is way lower, because of the strict entry measures the authorities are implementing. As a result now, Belarusians and Ukrainians are holidaying in Albania.
“Flights from Belarus, that were supposed to bring tourists to Montenegro, are diverting to Albania. The first flight was on June 12. Flights from Minsk, which were planned to Tivat in mid-June, landed in Tirana. Tourists were welcomed by the Minister of Tourism of Albania. Belarus is not yet on the white list of countries whose nationals can enter Montenegro. It has more than 25 active patients per 100,000 inhabitants,” Fly Montenegro says.
Restrictions for Albanian nationals
Closure of Montenegro’s borders for Albanian nationals is still in place, with some exceptions. Only those who provide an official document with the COVID-19 negative test results at the border, taken within 48 hours, can pass.
The mayor of Ulcinj, Loro Nrekic says that the opening of Montenegro’s borders for the nationals of the countries of the region, is the only way to save this summer season in Ulcinj and other destinations. There is no information when the current situation is changing.
