Albania to open beaches and land borders in June

Beaches in Albania will open on June 1 for the hotels and resorts and ten days later all of them will await the beachgoers.

The country’s Prime Minister Edi Rama announced that on Sunday on Facebook as Albania eases lockdown measures enforced due to coronavirus.

He said a special ad-hoc institution will be established to deal with beach licensing procedures of the private companies. Municipalities are obliged to allow businesses to operate only if they have a license from this new institution.

The summer season in Albania usually opens each year in the beginning of May. Despite the lockdown, people have been flocking to the beaches.

Albania’s land borders will open on June 1, but there is no decision regarding air borders. Schengen area, where most of the flight destinations from the capital Tirana are, remains closed until June 15. Hence, the lack of a decision from Albania.

Other beach destinations in Europe

In neighboring Montenegro beaches are open since mid-May, but with new rules. Unlike previous years, deckchairs and parasols are not placed next to each other and only a certain number of people can swim at the same time.

Going to the beach in Croatia is allowed by following certain rules: Croatian authorities are currently drafting new measures for the behavior in public spaces, and one of the goals is to prevent crowded beaches.

Greece opened up 500 of its beaches on May 16 as the country eased lockdown restrictions put in place during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Municipal workers and police have been deployed to spot offenders, slapping business owners with fines of up to $65,000. Sun-seekers caught violating social distancing rules, or creating crowds, will be subject to fines of about $1,080.

Italy, which plans to open regional and international borders on June 3 in a bid to boost tourism, is only now allowing locals back to beaches in their own regions — with restrictions.

In the northwestern Liguria region, people were allowed a dip in the sea and a walk along the shore, but no sunbathing. In Savona, a dozen people were fined for violating sunbathing bans. Rimini, on Italy’s east coast, attracted beachgoers beginning at dawn, and many sat in widely spaced groups. Still, authorities had to work at enforcing distancing on a popular beach in Palermo.

On Monday, local sunbathers and swimmers will be permitted in some of Spain’s coastal provinces. The number of beachgoers will be limited, and umbrellas must be at least 4 meters apart.

In Germany, domestic tourists will be allowed to return Monday to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania state in the northeast — home to the country’s Baltic Sea coast — and to hotels in Berlin, the popular capital.
