World Bank in a report highlights the progress in projects in popular tourist areas of southern Albania. It emphasizes that their completion is expected by the summer of 2026.
The projects are part of the Albanian government’s program to upgrade the country’s infrastructure. This program is financed by a World Bank loan. They include comprehensive urban improvement, restoration of castles and caves, and the construction of an underwater museum.
The World Bank’s Integrated Urban and Tourism Development Project is funding the creation of an underwater museum in Saranda, Albania. This project includes infrastructure upgrades and restoration of heritage sites. It aims to enhance tourism assets. The initiative also supports local economic growth in Southern Albania. The underwater museum plays a role in a broader initiative. This includes efforts to improve urban infrastructure. It also involves restoring historical landmarks and boosting tourism services in the region. The overall project, including the underwater museum, is expected to be completed by June 2026.
The transformation of the former maternity hospital into the Underwater World Museum, includes a multi-functional center. While it will feature the Underwater Museum, it will also have spaces for the youngsters. It’s more than just a museum; it will be an interactive experience, with a bar, conference rooms, and other facilities. The building dates back to the 1930s. As part of the integrated interventions, it will have game halls and two sports areas.
The World Bank financing has four objectives: improving urban infrastructure at a cost of 70 million euros. Upgrading tourist attractions will cost 8 million euros. Developing the tourism market and tourism products will cost 8.6 million euros, and generally supporting the development of local economies at a cost of 4.5 million euros.
The aforementioned World Bank report emphasizes that progress so far is assessed as satisfactory. The projects have already contributed positively to the regions where they are being implemented. For example, they have created new jobs in the tourism economy. It is also noted that an extra loan from the World Bank is planned. This loan will finance the completion of the projects.
