Flamingos offer magical natural spectacles in the “Divjakë-Karavasta” National Park in Albania.
Recently they have been spotted flying between the lagoon and pine trees. This transformation has turned the park into a special ecotourism destination in Albania.
Flamingos always live in groups, called flamboyance. The birds take to the air in groups and fly hundreds of kilometers during the migration period. The flight is in a V-shape. They continue until they reach their destination – a saltwater lake. This lake is an excellent place to build a nest and raise their young.
Usually hundreds of flamingos gather together like a water ballet group. All of them stand on one leg in the sun for hours to preen their pink feathers. They even sleep on one leg.
Their length ranges from 81 to 130 cm, but their body weight is small, ranging from 2-3.6 kg. Given their body size and color, flamingos are among the most distinctive birds from others.
Divjakë-Karavasta National Park is situated along the central Albanian coastline. It encompasses a diverse range of ecosystems, including wetlands, lagoons, dunes, and forests. The park is renowned for its rich biodiversity, particularly its avian population. The park is a haven for birdwatchers, attracting a wide array of waterfowl including Dalmatian pelican. An ideal destination for a day trip from Durrës, Berat or Tirana.
Take a boat ride on the Karavasta Lagoon! It starts where the road from Divjakë crosses one of the lateral channels. This is one kilometer east of the visitor center. You can also explore the park with a bicycle, which is an ideal mean of transportation in this flat landscape. Bikes can be rented at the center.
