Tirana-Airport-Durrës railway line will have five electric trains

The Tirana-Airport-Durrës railway line will run with electric trains. These trains will reach speeds of up to 120 km/h. It is expected to start operation in early 2027. The line will have five trains.

The draft budget for 2026 includes investments of 6.4 billion lek (66,228,352 Euro) in the railway sector. These investments are for a series of projects that aim to revitalize the railway systems. The goal is to integrate it into the European rail transport network. This integration is for both the movement of people and goods, as well as means and protection mechanisms.

Authorities say that most of the budget for the railway sector will be used for the Tirana-Airport-Durrës line. It will be put into operation with five electric trains. This will be the new face of the Albanian Railways, on the journey to be part of the European network.

The infrastructure works are nearing completion. Around 87% of them are completed. Work is underway on the signaling and telecommunications systems. Also authorities continue to build eight new railway stations along the line. The construction is expected to be completed by May 2026.

An important part of the project is the 4-kilometer extension of the railway line. This extension will enable the connection to the New Boulevard of Tirana. A new railway terminal will be built in the heart of the capital.

Thanks to this investment, the trip from the center of Tirana to “Mother Teresa” Airport will take only 10 minutes. The journey from Tirana to Durrës will take about 26 minutes.
